A Voice for Our Community

My name is Kim Dempsey. I wanted to go back in time to when my son, Alexander Dempsey was in 8th grade at Southern Wake Academy.

Let's start by saying that middle school is rough for most kids.

For my son, that might have been an understatement. At times he was bullied. By girls that had a crush on him, but he didn't feel the same way. He struggled at times with his ADHD.

It's that awkward time in life when kids are just trying to fit in and belong.

Now let's add Covid into the mix near the end of the school year. Eighth grade was tough.

Sometimes kids look for teachers that truly care about them. Not only for studying and learning, but someone that's there for them. They listen. They show up. Enter Ms Bonnie Greaves.

I remember she would schedule time with Alexander after school. They would meet and go over homework, how the day went and any other thing he wanted to cover. He knew she cared. And he trusted her. And he looked up to her. At times, they would be at the tables outside, working, talking and laughing. I would patiently wait for their session to end. My heart was full with gratitude. It made me feel blessed that my son had a wonderful teacher that was always on his side, always had his back. She made an impact on him that he has carried throughout his years of education. She empowered him with the confidence that he didn't know he had. She helped him to see that his desire to learn was impressive and not to be afraid to ask questions or seek out extra help. These are tools he continues to use.

Today, he is currently a graduate of Louisburg College. He received a two year academic scholarship. He got a two year running scholarship for cross country, indoor and out door track. He graduated this May, Magna Cum Laude. In two years he earned all A's and one B. He's continuing his education at UNC Charlotte in the Fall.

I asked him if he remembers Ms Greaves. He sported a smile, and quickly nodded.

There have been a few times over the years that Ms Greaves sends me a text. Just to check in on Alexander. It makes my heart sing. She's the real deal. She's a wonderful teacher who has always gone above and beyond for her students.

If anyone deserves a promotion within the Wake Country School system, Ms Bonnie Greaves has earned it.
